Fixed In-Line Gauging

Monitoring of automotive bodies and subassemblies can be done at idle end-of-line stations with multiple sensors throughout the assembly line to provide in-process monitoring. Sensor designs and packaging must be sufficiently rugged and robust to allow for mounting in the assembly weld tools, in close proximity to weld guns.

The welding environment includes molten weld splatter and very high electromagnetic fields from the welding current which, combined with the varying reflective properties of automotive components, make for some challenging sensor measurement conditions. The opportunities nevertheless outweigh these challenges, as the prospect of real-time data retrieval throughout the manufacturing process inspires new efficiencies and cost controls in this highly competitive industry.
